[Single person only! Transportation included] Enjoy a modern take on local cuisine for lunch at Kiyotsu Gorge, a popular spot even in winter. Afterward, visit the traditional Japanese cafe, designed by German architectural designer Karl Bengs, whose work has been featured on television. Kiyotsu Gorge's majestic columnar jointed rock faces and emerald-green clear streams inspire visitors. In 2018, the restaurant was featured in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, and at the end of the tunnel, the Panorama Station, a fantastical art space where the valley scenery is reflected in the water. Afterward, enjoy lunch at Echigo Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo, also featured in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. (Note: The restaurant is closed from December 22nd to January 8th, so it will serve hegi soba noodles instead.) The light blue interior, with its wall-to-wall glass windows and mirrored tables, is an art space where the seasonal scenery seen from the windows of Matsudai residents' homes is reflected. Enjoy a modern take on local cuisine. On weekends, we offer cheese fondue and a food buffet, while on weekdays we offer Satoyama rice or Satoyama curry. Snow Country Uonuma is a region where traditional wisdom is utilized, and a lifestyle of living in harmony with nature and experiencing the joys of the four seasons is cherished and passed down to the present day. A local guide will share some local tidbits as you explore the area. Visit Untoan, a Zen temple associated with Uesugi Kenshin's son, Kagekatsu. Surrounded by 400-year-old cedar trees, the stone-paved path is inscribed with sutras, and simply walking along the approach to the temple will bring you blessings. Operated by sake maker Hakkaisan, Uonuma no Sato is located in Nagamori, Minamiuonuma City, overlooking the sacred Mount Hakkai. The satoyama area is dotted with relaxing spots, including a beer brewery, soba restaurant Nagamori, a public employee cafeteria, Nigirime Shiteppen, confectionery shop Satoya, and Tsutsumi-ya Hachigura. The tour lasts two and a half hours, with free time for lunch. Finally, you'll explore Makino-dori Street, featuring the beautiful Gangi (arched gates) unique to snow country. Join me on a guided tour of Daigenta in Yuzawa, Niigata. Starting from Echigo Yuzawa Station, just 70 minutes from Tokyo, we'll cycle through Yuzawa village and explore Japanese parks on our way to Daigenta Canyon with ease on e-bikes. At Daigenta, we'll enjoy views of rice paddies and mountain peaks, take a break at the lake, and then ride downhill through the forest and old village. An optional lunch at a local cafe is available. We'll return to the station by 13:00, giving you time to explore Yuzawa's onsen town.
