Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch: On December 28, 1943, a large earthquake occurred near Mt. Usu on the shores of Lake Toya. Volcanic activity continued until September 10, 1945, and there were 17 relatively active volcanic events in two years. In commemoration of this volcanic activity, a new volcano with an elevation of 398 meters was designated a Special Natural Monument in 1957 and named "Showa Shinzan".
