This highly recommended snowshoe tour explores the snow-covered fumarolic zone of the Ushiro-no-Ikegake Nature Study Trail in Hachimantai, a region of heavy snowfall in northern Tohoku. This snow trekking tour searches for Asiatic black bear tracks in the winter forest. The beech forests of Hachimantai, deep in the mountains of northern Tohoku, are home to many Asiatic black bears. Explore the forest on snowshoes or skis, deep into the forest, accessible only in winter, in search of bear tracks. Through tracking, you'll learn about the trees used by the bears of Hachimantai and imagine what they were doing at different times of the year, learning how to maintain an appropriate distance from bears outdoors. You'll see various bear tracks, including claw marks in the trees, "bear shelves" where bears feed, and tree hollows (old hibernation holes). Learn about the trees used by bears through claw marks and winter buds, observe the footprints of wild birds and other animals, and experience the charm of the Hachimantai forest.

The allure of this course lies in the primeval beech forest that spreads out just a step from the ski slopes. Accessible only during the snow season, this forest offers a snowy landscape typical of the heavy snowfall of Hachimantai. While enjoying the forest scenery, find a suitable slope and try your hand at skiing! This combination is a fun and innovative winter activity. Courses can be tailored to suit your skiing proficiency level. We offer a variety of courses, from lift-accessible courses for those who want to ski a lot to flat courses for those who prefer to enjoy nature over skiing.

This two-day tour includes a snowboarding session to enjoy the satoyama terrain at the Sakegawa Eco Park campsite, which is surrounded by snowy satoyama, making a sample shaped snowboard, and a social gathering at a cottage in the eco park. Sakegawa Village is a snowy rural village with about 1.5m of snow even on the flat ground, and broadleaf satoyama spreads around the clear stream "Sakegawa" where salmon swim up. This year, Sakegawa Village's boarding friends who have enjoyed snowboarding and skateboarding in the past gathered together and established a volunteer group called the "Sakegawa Village Boarding Promotion Council" to enjoy the snowy satoyama terrain of Sakegawa Village with snowboards. The council aims to launch an original snowboard brand, and while learning from seniors who are leading the snowboard culture in the boarding industry, they are also holding activities such as snowboarding experience sessions at the village's snow festival.
