Plan description

The cruelest, harrowing, and sexiest ``Romeo and Juliet'' by Matthew Bourne, one of Britain's most popular and successful directors and choreographers. Matthew Bourne's company, New Adventures, will make a long-awaited visit to Japan five years after the masterpiece "Swan Lake," which holds the record for the longest run in ballet box office history, was performed in Tokyo in 2019! ■ Matthew Bourne's "Romeo + Juliet" [Performance period] Wednesday, April 10, 2024 - Sunday, April 21, 2024 [Venue] Tokyu Theater Orb ・ ・ ・ ・ ・ ・ ・ ・ ・ ・<Staff> Original work : William Shakespeare Music: Sergei Prokofiev Direction and Choreography: Matthew Bourne Art and Costumes: Les Brotherston Lighting: Paul Constable Sound: Paul Grouse Orchestration: Terry Davis Organizer: Horipro/TBS/BS-TBS Planning and production: Horipro Sponsored by: British Council/TBS Radio <Cast> New Adventures

Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare's famous tragedy

Like the classical ballet version, it uses Prokofiev's music, but of course it's not just "Romeo and Juliet." The setting is not 14th century Italy, but the near future. The story unfolds at the Verona Institute, a correctional facility for rebellious young people. Although there are no opposing Montague and Capulet families, the common theme is the difficulty young people have in living under unreasonable oppression. In the original story, Juliet's cousin Tybalt, who secretly has feelings for her, is here a prison guard who slanders Juliet, and Father Laurence, who supports the two lovers, is now a woman but remains a dependable figure, and Romeo's best friend. It may be fun to discover Matthew Bourne's unique "shifts", such as Mercutio being depicted as gay.

Matthew Bourne, the genius who captivated the whole of Britain (direction and choreography)

For many years, I hesitated to work on ``Romeo and Juliet'' as a new work. Can anything more be done from the original work, which has been performed in so many versions? Because I thought. However, he found inspiration in a project launched in 2019 to develop young talent across the UK. I was able to create a wonderful work by welcoming up-and-coming creators and cast members to the world-class creative team that I always work with. And it turned out to be an unexpected blockbuster! We are very much looking forward to reproducing this work as part of the New Adventures repertoire and delivering this powerful story of love between young people to everyone.
