The end of the second lift is a frost-covered area with a series of large ice monsters. You can also enjoy viewing frost-covered trees. From the end of the lift, put on your crampons and trek for about an hour to Senninzawa Ice Garden. Rental snowshoes are the latest gear that has just been introduced. When you arrive, have lunch while looking at the icefall. The guide will provide you with hot water, so please bring a warm lunch such as cup noodles. Also, a tent-type portable toilet will be set up during lunch, so you can use the restroom. You can stay hydrated without worrying about going to the toilet. After enjoying the mysterious world of ice, climb back up the steep slope and change into snowshoes. Walk on the fluffy fresh snow, slide on your butt, and enjoy walking down the mountain to the ski resort without using the lift on the way back. Those who are new to snowy mountain climbing can also participate, but they must have the physical strength to carry a backpack and walk on their own feet for at least 4 hours. There are some steep descents and climbs. If the route to the icefall is not safe to walk due to field conditions, we may change to walking around the area using snowshoes. <Equipment used> Snowshoes: ATLAS Helium BC 23,26 (alpine snowshoes with innovative lightness and portability) Stocks: Montbell Fall Line Pole (lightweight stock for backcountry use) Light crampons: Montbell Snow Spikes 10 (Ice) (Required on the steep slopes leading up to the waterfall) Helmet: Montbell Alpine Helmet (wear when approaching the icefall. Store in backpack while moving) <Not included in price> Required gear rental 3,000 yen (snowshoes, poles, light crampons, helmet), parking lot fee (1,000 yen only on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, free on weekdays) *Participants of 6 or more people are also accepted. Please contact us. ※ Our guides can speak English, so English speakers are welcome to join.
This snowshoeing tour was one of the best things I did in Japan, even as a foreigner. All the guides I was with spoke very good English and were super knowledgeable and fun to talk to. They responded quickly to my queries about transport to Zao Liza World (which can be accessed by bus from Yamagata if well timed), and details about the experience. The equipment is high quality and very fun to learn to use. The scenery and waterfall is very impressive. Overall, value for money and fun is fantastic and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone travelling in Japan.
