Excellent experience at my first Noh show. The performance itself was great, very ritualised and skilled and different from Kabuki. Lots of background information in English and close caption. Would have liked to have translations of dialogue and lyrics if that were possible....

This is a Noh performance event held at Kyoto's Noh Theater. Why not create a memorable memory of your trip with a Noh experience that may change your perspective? This special performance will be fully translated into English for foreign visitors to Japan. Noh is a form of "comprehensive art" that combines visual, musical, and literary elements, and its artistry can be appreciated in a variety of ways. On stage, performers wear elegant Noh masks and costumes, and perform chants and dances to music. Noh's simple yet sophisticated stage expression continues to inspire many artists today.

Noh, a traditional performing art, has been designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, along with other forms of art, including Kabuki. A special Noh performance, "Tokage Noh," is held only once a year at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara, the sacred ground of Noh. This solemn performance, which fuses Buddhism and Noh, still retains a strong religious ritual feel, with applause being discouraged and viewing prohibited from the front. This event will feature a commentary by Petko Slavov, a PhD in Noh research, and Noh expert Yoshie Yamamoto, held in the main building of Yoshikien Garden, a cultural property normally closed to the public. After learning about Noh in a space steeped in history and tranquility, enjoy a unique evening experiencing a magical performance. Note: The photos of the Noh performance are different from those shown.
