We will explain how to make paper in an easy-to-understand manner for beginners, so please feel free to participate. You can experience learning papermaking techniques directly from a craftsman. You will learn how to process kozo, a traditional paper material, and hand-make about two sheets of Japanese paper in half a day to take home. ~Experience Flow~ 9:00 (13:30) Orientation An introduction to the types of Yoshino handmade Japanese paper, the experience procedure, and precautions. 9:20 (13:50) Workshop tour The papermaking process of kozo will be explained while looking at actual tools. 9:40 (14:10) Papermaking experience We will work together to prepare the materials, and each participant will take turns making paper. First, we will learn how to move the paper. Then, after making one sheet, we will take turns. 11:00 (15:30) Visit to the kozo field While the water is drained from the paper, we can take a short break and visit the nearby kozo fields and enjoy the view of the Yoshino River bank. 11:30 (16:00) Drying the paper We will stick our paper, which has now been drained of water, to the dryer to dry. Once it is completely dry, we will remove it and roll it up into a tube to pack it up for take home.

Learn directly from a traditional handmade washi paper craftsman

Kuzu village, Yoshino-cho, Nara Prefecture. This is a production area for three types of washi paper: Uda paper, Misu paper, and Yoshino paper (lacquer paper). This paper supports Japanese cultural assets and is also used in the restoration of paintings overseas, and is characterized by its thinness and strength. Yoshino's handmade washi paper technique is said to have been handed down for over a thousand years. Making use of this traditional technique, we will use an actual tool that cannot be used in regular experiences: a bamboo blind.

The surrounding area is rich in history and nature

Kunisu-no-Sato is a place connected to the Jinshin War. The Yoshino River flows in front of the workshop, and you can also visit the paper mulberry fields. There are almost no stores in the area, but you can experience the simple local culture.

You can take home paper made only from kozo paper

You can experience the whole process from paper making to drying, and take home about two sheets of paper. The size of the paper is 320mm x 510mm.
