Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, is one of the snowiest areas in the world. This tour will take you to see and experience the traditional event "Muko-nage and Suminuri," also known as the "Strange Festival of Echigo," held on Little New Year in the snow-covered Matsunoyama region. On December 5, 2024, Japan's "traditional sake brewing" was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO! Niigata Prefecture has the most sake breweries in Japan, and alcohol is an inseparable and deep connection to the city. This time, you can visit Tsunan Brewery, sample sake, and shop! It's cold, but your body and mind will be warmed by this tour, where you can enjoy Tokamachi in winter!

Visit and experience the traditional Matsunoyama region New Year's Day event "Muko-nage and Sumiguri"

A traditional event held on January 15th every year at Matsunoyama Onsen, celebrating the Little New Year. The groom who married the previous year is thrown down a snowy slope from the 5-meter-high grounds of Yakushido. Nowadays, it is held to bless the marriage and to strengthen the bond between the couple, but it is said that its origin is a remnant of the practice of abduction in marriage, or a modified form of revenge for the kidnapping of a village girl. Sumiguri is a Little New Year event in which people mix snow with ashes from a Shinto ritual called "Sai no Kami" (also known as Dondo Yaki) and paint each other's faces while saying "Congratulations." It is a prayer for health and prosperity in the family business. After painting your face, you can enjoy a bath in Matsunoyama Onsen! Enjoy this cold event that will warm your body and soul as you celebrate the newlyweds and pray for safety in the year ahead!

Dress code - Must bring items	Warm clothing such as a scarf, gloves, and hat, a towel for bathing, and a change of clothes in case they get dirty while painting. Snow boots or rubber boots are recommended for footwear.
About rental items	If you wish to rent towels (face towel and bath towel) when bathing at Matsunoyama Onsen Nasteview Yunoyama, there will be an additional charge of 250 yen.

Matters require attention	When applying the face cream, the face cream will be applied. In that case, the cream may get on your clothes.
