If you are visiting Hida Takayama, you will definitely see this doll! Why not try making a Sarubobo yourself? It is a full-fledged experience that starts with stuffing the body with cotton and then sewing it together with a needle and thread, and is fun for both children and adults. (For children, we ask that a parent or guardian help with the experience.)

Our most popular experience is making Sarubobo!

"Sarubobo" means "baby monkey." In the past, in the Hida region, there was a custom of making Sarubobo as stuffed toys for grandchildren, and for daughters to pray for good relationships, children, and marital harmony, and also to ward off illnesses and accidents (monkey). Now, Sarubobo has become a famous Hida souvenir, so why not try making your own! And the reason Sarubobo has no face is so that it can reflect your feelings at the time!
