Time to face the once-in-a-lifetime wood that comes to the workshop after an eternity After graduating from university, he learned the technique of turning wood in the mountains of Kaga City, next door to Komatsu, and is currently working as a lacquer artist in Komatsu City. Ms. Fumiko Iku is a woodturner who manufactures products. In this program, you can experience making wooden bowls at Mr. Iku's workshop "Hoori", which is located in a rural village. Trees grow thick over decades, and even after being felled, they take a long time to dry before being brought into the workshop by chance. Mr. Iku's work as a woodturner is one in which he stoically faces the products of time. In this program, we invite you to learn about the roots of the tree, feel the warmth of the tree itself, and feel the wonder of handiwork, and try making your own wooden vessel. It's sure to be a treasure for a lifetime.

Can be shaped into a bowl of your choice

In the experience, you can shape the outside of the base wood that will become the bowl yourself using a plane. Under the guidance of the dough chef, you can shape the bowl to your liking, such as how thick you want the bowl to be and whether to add a raised base or not.

You can experience turning things on a potter's wheel.

When you hear the word "potter's wheel," many people probably think of the potter's wheel used to make ceramics such as Kutani ware. The potter's wheel called Yokoza-style is used for wood turning. The wooden base that will become the bowl is mounted horizontally and carved while rotating with the foot pedal.

A must-see is the blacksmith work that is essential for turning wood.

A planer is essential for wood turning. In fact, the blacksmith work of making planes is also very important for woodworkers. Each woodturner uses a different planer depending on what they are making, so each piece is made by hand. Please enjoy the many planes in the workshop and the blacksmith work.
