Snow is fun! Experience making a mini snow hut using Yokote's high-quality snow! Anyone, from families with children to those who just want to experience snow, is welcome to participate. Kamakura, a winter tradition in Akita Prefecture, has a history of approximately 450 years in Yokote as a New Year's celebration to worship the water god. The Yokote Snow Festival is held every year in mid-February and is famous for the construction of approximately 80 approximately 3-meter-tall kamakura throughout the city. In addition, approximately 2,000 mini kamakura are built by locals and children every year in the elementary school playground and Hebi-no-saki Riverside area near the festival venue, and are enveloped in soft candlelight at night. Why not create your own unique mini kamakura using the snow from Yokote, a region known for its heavy snowfall and the home of kamakura? Participants will receive a small souvenir.
Create a one-of-a-kind mini snow hut using snow from Yokote, a region with heavy snowfall. Any shape or decoration is OK. In the evening, light candles in the mini snow hut and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere. For those who wish, children can enjoy snow activities such as sledding and snowman building. The process of making a mini snow hut is very simple! All you need to do is make a snow mound about 30cm high and dig a hole. Even if you're new to snow hut building, our staff will happily teach you how, so you can easily participate. The basic method is the same, but you can change the shape and holes to create an original mini snow hut that you will grow to love! A candle-lit snow hut will have a different, fantastical atmosphere than one made in the daylight, so don't miss this opportunity!
A perfect memento of your winter in Yokote ♪ Comes with a cute souvenir.
Kamakura (snow huts) are a winter tradition in Akita Prefecture. In Yokote, the Yokote Snow Festival, held annually in mid-February, has a history of approximately 450 years as a New Year's celebration to honor the water god. During the festival, approximately 100 kamakura (snow huts) approximately 3 meters tall are constructed throughout the city with the help of artisans and local residents. A shrine is set up inside the snow chamber of the kamakura to worship the water god, and local children play inside, drinking sweet sake and roasting mochi (rice cakes), calling out "haitte tanse" (please come inside and sleep well). This unique folk tradition continues to this day. Additionally, approximately 2,000 "mini kamakura" (snow huts) are built by locals and children every year in the Yokote Minami Elementary School grounds and Hebi-no-saki Riverside venues. At night, candles are lit inside, creating a mystical atmosphere. When each candle is lit, the entire area transforms into a truly mystical space, creating a truly romantic experience.
