Yunishigawa is well-known as a hot spring town in a remote valley in the mountains. The town is also famous for being the place that the samurai Taira fled to after being defeated in battle by Minamoto in the 12th century.
This festival was held for the first time more than 20 years ago and has been designated by the Japanese government as one of the most beautiful night views in Japan.

Time schedule
DAY 1 Tucked deep in the mountains, Yunishikawa is famous for the deep snow which blankets it in winter. You can enjoy the landscape here, so white it would be impossible to imagine from looking at Tokyo.
Day 2 After leaving Yunishigawa, take the chance to visit the Nikkō Toshō-gū Shrine World Heritage Site. It is the resting place of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, who ruled Japan over 400 years ago.
