History of mage-wappa

It is about 1300 years that the Akida cedar became to the materiel of mage-wappa. The mage-wappa work estimated as belonging to the early 10th century is displaying in Odate City Musem. The works have almost the same shape as it does today surprisingly. In late 17th century, Odate Castle Lord, Nishiya Satake encouraged mage-wappa making as a sideline of lower-grade warriors and developed it as an industry. It has been registered as a traditional craft of the country since 1980 while developing as a specialty product representing Akida nowadays. The mage-wappa are still made and used in the daily life.

About Akita cedar

Akita mage-wappa, made in Odate city, is using one of Japan's famous woods as cedar. The cedar grow naturally is banned for the purpose of environment friendly though, the woods from afforestation are traded as material now. But the quality of even wood grain, lightness, elasticity and the pleasant smell are the same. There is no change of being the best material for mage-wappa making. Odate Craft Studio is providing the best products under the environment friendly policy that maintain the balance of logging and planting.

Professional work from craftsmen

The mage-wappa has used the most beautiful part with the grain of annual ring. Thin the wood and then soften it with boiling water. Bend it quickly according to the mold and dry it. Tight the dried bentwood with bark of Japanese cherry. At last, polish the surface with sandpaper. All these processes are hand-crafted by craftsmen, techniques that has not changed from the old ages of the birth of the mage-wappa. Every piece of work are made in a long time filled with efforts and carefulness.
